How to wash cashmere

How to wash cashmere

It can be daunting to wash cashmere as it is delicate and valuable. But we should not be feeling this way. It is much easier to take care of our garments than we think. We can skip dry cleaning for the jumpers and wash them at home. There are a few rules to follow, and we have settled on a hand-wash or washing machine.

What we need

 1. A good wool shampoo
 2. Mesh washing bag (if used washing machine)
 3. A clean towel

Inspect well all the garments. Check for the stains and what kinds of stains they are. If the stains are visible and hard removable, it is better to take it to dry cleaning. Professionals will know how to approach it.

After inspection, turn inside out all the garments you want to wash, whether handwashing or using the washing machine method.

How to hand wash

Prepare water no warmer than 30 degrees; the colder it is, the better, but no ice cold. Pour washing liquid for the wool as per instructions on the packaging. Mix the water well with the shampoo.

It is time to soak your garment in the water, but make sure that you do not mix the colours. Light colours with light, dark with dark. If you are handwashing, it is better to wash each garment separately one by one.

Once it is in the water, leave it to soak for a few minutes and gently swirl. Do not scramble your garment if you find the stain. Go easy; otherwise, you will have a visual result of the washing.

Drain the dirty water and rinse it a few times. Rinse with the same water temperature as you soaked it. Squeeze excess water and gently press your jumper into a ball. When water stops dripping, lay it out on a dry clean towel. Place the jumper in its original shape. Fold the towel in half over your jumper. Then, roll the towel with the jumper inside until most moisture is gone.

When moisture is gone, place the jumper on the dry, clean towel in its original shape and leave it to dry.

How to machine wash

Place your garment into a mesh bag (it protects from the agitation in the water). Remember not to mix the colours, bright with bright, dark with dark. Put on the delicate cycle and ensure the water temperature is cold and the spin is low. Remove it immediately as soon as it stops washing so as not to lose the shape of your jumper. The drying process is the same as handwashing: place the jumper on the dry, clean towel in its original shape and leave it to dry.
